In a text box in Word, you can align text horizontally or vertically, and you can adjust the margins to be narrower or wider. Horizontal alignment determines how the left and right edges of a paragraph fit between the margins, while vertical alignment determines the placement of the text between the upper and lower margins.

I'm struggling with an issue in MS Word for Mac 2011 (version 14.4.7). I'm editing a Word doc with another author. In between versions, the author has fiddled with the text margins. The text now runs only 2/3 of the way across the page (or, to be more exact, the space within the margins). However, when I select-all and highlight all the text, I go up to the rulers to slide the ruler out to the correct margin width, but the 'slider' is greyed out. Basically, the only way I can change the width of the text column, so that the lines extend to the proper length, is to highlight each para, or even down to each line of dialogue, then use the slider to adjust (so, i.e., change each line manually). It won't let me do the whole thing at once. This is a 300pp document – I don't have time to go through the whole thing line by line, and I know there's something obvious I'm missing but I just can't find it.
Things I've already tried:
– Highlighting all text at once and using the slider to rearrange width of text col (but slider greyed out)
– Changing the text layout to Normal, then to another type, then back again to Normal. The margins change, but nothing happens to the narrow text column.
– Copying and pasting the text into a clean Word doc. Again, nothing happens to the text.
I've attached a screenshot if this is at all useful – you can see I've manually altered the first two lines in the shot, but the lines below are still at 2/3 width. This continues throughout the document, despite the margins being set to Normal.
Could anyone help?
